Welcome!
While my work begins from the same idea as conventional papercuts,
the use of matboard as my primary material makes the effect distinctly different.
Matboard is the same material you use to protect and enhance pictures, posters,
and other artwork when you frame them. Matboard comes in a variety of colors.
Each sheet of matboard is approximately 1/8th inch thick with the color
of the matboard a thin paper layer on top of a (usually) white core. Each design
is created by cutting and layering matboard of one or more colors. My designs are
cut with a blade held at a 45-degree angle. This angle causes the white core to form
an outline around the design. It is this white outline, contrasting against the
exterior color of the matboard, which defines the design.
Because matboard is thicker than paper, it is difficult to cut into small or
intricate shapes. My designs are often, therefore, stylized which creates an
elegant and contemporary effect.
I cut each piece of matboard using hand-held blades. The blades are automatically
placed at the correct 45 degree angle by a special blade holder. I use a straight-edge
for straight lines and to cut the matboard to the correct size. I cut all curved edges
by free hand.
