Wholesaling – A lot to learn

8/9/2016

Yes, I sell my work directly to my customers. But, I also sell some designs to stores, wholesaling. I freely admit, the key word here is "some". I am definitely squarely in the (slow)  learning stage.

When I decided to try wholesaling, I did my research. I talked to people who wholesaled. I looked into shows and wholesaling web sites. I even took a class.

It sounded like a great idea. Sell my work directly to stores, let them do the interacting with the customers, and I get to make my art. I can do fewer art shows, stop spending so much of my time traveling and setting up and taking down my displays, and struggling with weather.

It turns out there was a lot more to selling wholesale than I knew, even with all my research. It takes a certain type of artist and art to make it in the wholesale world. At this point, I am still determining whether I am the right fit to be a successful wholesale artist. But, maybe you are the right fit.

In future blogs I will provide more insight into what I learned, the hard way, about wholesaling.

What Inspires You? - Reading

If you do not read a lot, the picture at the beginning of this post probably seems overwhelming. If you do read a lot, the picture at the beginning of this post looks like nothing. Sometimes I think readers like to show off their bookshelves to see the look on non-readers faces. And of course there is the competitive spirit among readers...Do I have more books than you? (Please note, this picture does not show all my books, nor does it show library books read, or e-books read. :) ) In addition, there is the fun of finding cool new books you have not read yet in someone else's shelves. Of course, e-books have messed with the fun of this bookshelf competitiveness. On the other hand, heavy readers no longer have to haul an extra suitcase on vacation to fit all their books.

I read. A lot.

Science Fiction. Fantasy. Mystery. Biography. And even (aaak) Romance.

I like to read to remove myself from the day-to-day. I live for adventure and happy endings.

I read when I should be writing blogs, creating art, running errands, working out, and sleeping. And saying all that, I still read less now than I did when I was younger.

Most of my artwork cannot be specifically connected to a particular book. But, reading opens my mind to new ideas. And that makes my time in the studio...when I get there...more creative.

If you will be at  Worldcon in Kansas City, Missouri from Wednesday, August 17 to Sunday, August 21, 2016, look for me. I would love to hear about what books inspire you. I will once again be in the Dealers Room next to my good friend Christina Collins of Mudcat Studio (beautiful hand-carved pottery).  According to the Dealers Room map, my table in the Dealers Room is: KEL-A     Island B Table 9.
