How I Create - Balancing Thought and Inspiration

7/11/2017

Every artist has their own way of working whether:
  • long thought processes that require planning, drawing, making models,
or
  • simply going with their gut and creating from emotions and surroundings.

I find my best work comes from a mix of thinking and feeling, or planning and simply following my fingers into a new place.

When I expend too much thought and planning, I get so wound up, that nothing gets actually created.
When I expend too little thought and too much emotion, I sometimes end up with pieces that simply do not go together.

Sometimes, I just end up with a pile of pieces that end up going together in a completely different way, on a completely different day.

Flowers for Every Occasion

6/27/2017

Flowers are a sign of spring, celebration, appreciation, and thanks. We carry flowers on our wedding day, give them to those we love, and send them as gifts for holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays.

They also sprinkle leaves and petals on our tables and desks as they fade.

My copper enamel sculptures provide long lasting flowers that will not fade. From complex sculptures that provide the feeling of a jungle to single flowers, select a copper enamel sculpture to meet your needs.

To find the perfect flower sculpture for any occasion, go to my online store or Knox Gallery of Fine Art in Richmond Heights, Missouri.

If you cannot make it to Knox Gallery and cannot find what you want in my onlihe store, look at my Sculpture Gallery. If a sculpture is available, I will let you know and work out shipping with you.

Sailboat Sculptures Finished

6/13/2017

Back on April 18, 2017, I blogged about the pieces for a work in progress tentatively titled Sailboats. Well, I finally finished my sailboat sculptures and put them in Knox Gallery of Fine Art in Richmond Heights, Missouri. But, because I like you, I am also posting the pictures below. Contact me, if you cannot get to Knox Gallery, but want to purchase one of these sculptures. If they are still available, I will give you information about price and shipping.

Each Sculpture is a Journey - or - How I Create

5/16/2017

Each sculpture I create is a journey. Sometimes the journey is short and easy. Sometimes the journey is long and difficult. Pieces have been known to hang around my studio for weeks or months waiting to find the right companions for their journey. But, most eventually reach the destination of a finished sculpture.

Some artists draw out their designs in advance. Then create their work to match that design. I try, but that rarely works for me.

I do draw, and sketch, and plan. And then...I make something that usually looks nothing like my drawing, sketch, or plan. Or, I make something that looks like a drawing, sketch, or plan I made so long ago I no longer consciously remember.

I am more of an adventure creator.

I go down to my studio with an idea, or no idea. I pick up some metal and start messing with it.

1. I pick up the metal.

2, I turn it around,
3. I put it against another piece of metal.
4. I cut some metal.
5. I repeat steps 1 -3.
6. I hammer and fold some metal.
7. I repeat steps 1-3, and sometimes steps 4 and 6.

The result sometimes looks something like a sketch I made, often it has only a vague resemblance, or no resemblance at all. Often, it looks like a mess, and gets recycled. Sometime it looks cool. You do not have to see the messes. You only have to look at the cool stuff. Of course, sometimes the cool stuff has parts of a previous mess in it. That is the fun of it.

Once I decide I have something cool, or potentially cool, I start playing with enamels. What part of the design will get enamel? Or is the design all enamel? In which case it is time for color decisions: what color(s), opaque or transparent, wet pack or sifted. Many designs get multiple layers of colors, which is another adventure. Some enamel colors shift depending on the metal and/or how hot the piece gets in the kiln. Colors deepen if there are multiple layers of the same color. Colors change if there are multiple layers of different colors. Again, sometimes a mess, and sometimes cool. I learn things from both the messed and the cool stuff. Often the stuff I learn from a mess, ends up later in a cool piece.

Sometimes, I add more pieces (see all above steps). Sometimes I add wire and beads. I keep playing with everything until I have something I like. Hopefully you will like it too.

Picture
I shaped all these pieces with no idea where they would go...Then I started putting the pieces together and drilling holes. Suddenly I found a new sculpture in progress. Once I chose the colors it all started to come together. Wait to see what it looks like when it is all put together.

Added Sculpture Gallery to My Web Site - Take Two

4/10/2017

For some reason, my web site manager deleted all my text for this post. So, I am trying again.
Picture
I have added a Sculpture Gallery to my web site. I plan to post new sculptures as they are created. So, hopefully, you will come back regularly to see what is new.

Most of my sculptures and some jewelry are available at Knox Gallery of Fine Art in Richmond Heights, Missouri. However, if you have a question, you can always contact me through my web site. My jewelry is still available through the Store on this web site and Missouri Artists on Main in St. Charles Missouri.

The gallery format is new to me. So, I will be curious to hear what you think.

The Sculpture Gallery shows thumbnail images of each sculpture. When you hover over a thumbnail image, a title and size display. When you click on a thumbnail image, a full size image displays. You can page through the full size images by clicking the arrows on the left or right of a full size image.

I am excited to see all my sculptures in one place. I hope you enjoy them.
